The Deep Green Sea - BUTOH PERFORMANCE

Dark Morning Butoh Theatre - Beach Workshop Winter 2024

Butoh or 'Ankoku Butoh' 舞踏 means ‘dance of darkness’  emerged in Japan in the aftermath of World War II, in part, a rebellion of Japanese youth culture against the horrors and devastation of war.  Characterised by improvisation, Butoh explores the extreme emotions of life, often exploring fundamental or taboo elements of the psychological state of the human soul.  Its development was also inspired Surrealism and it is now recognised as a form of radical protest, shadow healing and a subversive form of art with a universal expression, going beyond the confines of any specific culture.

‘The Deep Green Sea’ performance presents an ‘Antipodean’ Butoh, an upside-down world, responding and interweaving with the immersive imaginary world created by Artist Kelsey Ashe. Butoh choreography by Rei Rei of Dark Morning Butoh Theatre, costumes by Molly Ryan and music by Dark Swan Productions, Photography Robyn Laycock @rel
